Fred & Barney Blogs: Hay Fred- are you with us? I must tell you about a week past Sunday. It was late afternoon when the guv returned from dog walking on Torrington Commons. He visited us in the yard and spotted feathers just under the gate to the back field. Into the field he went and found some more a few yards away. These were chicken feathers. No sign of chickens anywhere! He wandered around looking for them- and any trace of more feathers when he found Vital- also known as Lady Sainsbury since the demise of Lucky- that awful hen. She was hiding between the water butt and the shed wall. Off he went to get the cat basket to use to catch her. He uses it since he learnt that because it has a mesh frame and as he closes in on them they can still see light and they think it is safe to stay put. However she was ‘freaked- out’ and panicked off into the gorse bushes. Eventually she was caught and returned to their home and shut-in. He carried on searching the field for Lord Sainsbury, scratching his head as to what had happened to him. He couldn’t believe that the local fox had got him and not Vital. Sainsbury is a mighty big cockerel, standing about 21 inches tall and weighing in at around 6 kilos. He eventually decided to return to the house and tell She-who-must-be-obeyed what he had found. As he was going up the drive he spotted Sainsbury at the top, outside the double gates, strutting back and forward across the drive. He rushed up to open the gates and let him in. Down the drive he strutted, Cock-a-doodle-doo! and grunts as he went in search of ‘his woman’.
I could have told the guv (if he had asked) what had happened. The fox got a hold of Vital twice and twice Sainsbury attacked it and saw it off! He chased it across the field, through the hedge and on to the road, then turned left to come home. It was a great moment in time Fred!
Yeah! That was a hoot Barney! To think that they both should have been on the-shelf at 8 weeks old! The guv keeps rescuing animals. Do you remember last year -it was Walter the pigeon. Ok Barney. I must give the book a plug- What Horses Say by Julie Dicker & Anna Clemence Mews. It was amazing how Julie could tell so much from a small bit of my mane sent in the post, when she had never met me!
