The biggest land rover competition in the country this year is being hosted by Cornwall & Devon Landrover Club over the late May bank holiday at Newnham Park in Plymouth. – “Not to be missed” , said the sport’s editor. 

Such a large event takes a huge amount of organisation and effort and the organising committee had set aside the Easter weekend to have a trial run of the flagship event known as the competitive safari.  If you think Landrovers are slow, clumsy and boring, then think again.  Get rid of any unnecessary bodywork, fit a roll cage and a “tweaked” 4.6 litre Rover V8 engine and the normally demure  is transformed into a raging beast capable of tackling the most severe off road obstacles at unbelievably ridiculous speeds. 

The only limiting factor is usually the driver, and they aren’t exactly renowned for their common sense!  Rollovers and crashes are common, but fortunately, due to the strength of the rollcage and vehicle safety regulations, injuries are very few and far between. 

It’s a great spectator event and you can get very close to the action in many cases – just don’t get too close as they don’t stop for much, if at all.  Sadly the Easter event had to be moved at the very last second due to the incredible amount of rain that we had leading up to our planned practice weekend.  We did hold a very good event a few miles away where we proved the organisation and our new timing software.
